Side Effects of Massage?

Hi, all! I know there are a lot of licensed massage therapists on here, so maybe one of you guys could help me. But even outside of LMT's, any ideas would be useful.

Last Thursday I received a 60-minute deep tissue massage. It felt absolutely wonderful. It's the first time I was with this particular therapist, but not the first time I've had that kind of massage. The LMT warned me to drink lots of water afterwards, which I'm used to doing, and did. However, the next day, I got a migraine, which I've not had in a long time. I also felt sick for most of Friday and Saturday, and all I wanted to do was sleep. By Sunday I felt fine again.

Do you think these symptoms had anything to do with the massage? If so, what could have caused this? Did the therapist do something wrong? Did I not take care of myself properly? Or was my body just reacting to something totally different? Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like you were having a completely normal reaction to the massage. The reason we, (massage therapists), tell you to drink lots of water, is because the massage you receive releases a whole bunch of toxins into your system, so that you can flush them out. Drinking a lot of water will help in the flushing process. so, because of all the toxins, it's normal that a person may have headaches, feel achy, sleepy, etc. Since you felt fine within a couple of days, it's not anything to worry about. If you hadnt' felt better, then I would've contacted the massage therapist, or even your doctor. It sounds like, since you're feelign better, you have nothing to worry about. As I said, it sounds to me like you were just having a completely normal reaction to the toxins that were released into your system. Just remember to drink a lot of water, even if you havent' had a massage. Water is one thing that greatly eliminates the toxins out of our bodies.

Hi! Thanks for your post, LeAnn! I was hoping you might chime in. The weird thing is, I've had that kind of massage before, and do drink lots of water. I drank lots of it last week, too. I've just never had that kind of raction before when I've had a massage. I've been warned of it, but never actually had it. Weird. I wonder if that means I just had a higher amount of toxins released than usual? Hmmm. Anyway, thank for the post.

That most likely means that you had a better tharapist, who got more of those toxins on the move on the way out of your body. Getting a Reki treatment next time in combination with or just after a massage can really help.
